Enjoyable Birthday Party
In April a group of 15 friends came to the Cheriton to celebrate a special birthday. The weather was excellent for the stay so guests were able to enjoy a celebratory drink and canapes in the garden before dinner in the dining room. As Coq au Vin had been requested, Stan, Julian and Sue entered fully into the spirit of a French theme!
Large party from Finland
At the Cheriton we were very pleased to welcome a group of eighteen from Finland who all study English at the same evening class. They took the whole house for two nights at the start of May, with five of the party being accommodated by our friends and colleagues at The Groveside.
We enjoyed providing supper for all eighteen in our dining room on both nights of their stay. The guests tucked into a choice between chicken cacciatore and luxury cottage pie followed by baked vanilla cheesecake or apple and blueberry crumble on the first night; on the second night we did somerset pork and fish and prawn pie followed by Black Forest trifle or meringue fruit nests. All the dishes were home cooked (as always!) so we were pretty busy in the kitchen and, as usual, Sue was around to give us lots of help in serving the meal. It all went very well!
We have now re-decorated and updated all the bedrooms since we bought the Cheriton in April 2011. This winter we concentrated on the double rooms and the twin room we didn’t do last year. This follows on from the significant improvement work on all three single rooms we completed last winter when not only were they re-decorated but also the en-suite bathroom space was greatly expanded in Rooms 5 & 8. Our guests in 2012 really liked the work we had done, and we are very confident that guests in 2013 will like the results of this winter’s work just as much as we do!
The Hall and Landings
Along with complete re-decoration (goodbye white paint and dark wood!) there is a lovely new solid wood floor in the hall, new glass in the vestibule door and lots of new artwork on the landings.
This room has been restored to its original proportions (previously a corner had been taken out) so there is even more space for guests to relax in.
We’re very proud of the garden with the new seating and barbeque areas that were established in the spring of 2012. In the late summer / autumn guests at breakfast enjoyed home grown tomatoes from the new greenhouse.
Brickwork expert Matt spent 5 weeks in the autumn completely re-pointing the brickwork on the front of the house. Now it looks like new!
